March construction update from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy

The latest Monthly Construction Update from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which uses the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) as one of its sources, is now available.

The latest update shows that construction output increased by 1.1% in January 2022, meaning it’s now at its highest level since September 2019. It follows a 2.0% increase in December 2021, and marks the third consecutive monthly growth of greater than 1.0%.

While December’s growth came solely from an increase in new work, January’s growth came from an increase in repair and maintenance (4.6%) as new work saw a slight decrease of 0.8%.

The level of construction output in January 2022 was 1.4% above the February 2020 pre-coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic level; with new work 2.8% below, and repair and maintenance 9.3% over the February 2020 level.
